TAME's Regional Engineering Competitions
TAME’s Regional Engineering Competitions bring together thousands of TAME Engineers each year to build their skills through collaborative engineering challenges while connecting with new peers and mentors.
“I got involved with TAME as an 8th grader in Odessa, Texas, when I was invited to participate in the Math and Science Competition in Houston. The competition was a blast. It was well-organized and fun. There was a group project where we had to simulate the most efficient windmill. It turned out to be an inertia formula. We didn’t win that time, but it was still really cool. We also got to tour a jet factory and meet the people who worked there. TAME opened my eyes to math and science fields. It gave me a confidence boost.”

TAME Regional Competitions: FAQ
How do I register my TAME Club to compete at the TAME Regional Competition?
TAME Regional Competitions are open to 6-12 grade students in eligible* TAME Clubs.
In November, the TAME State Office will contact Club Leaders to confirm whether their TAME Club plans to attend the Competition. If you have not heard from your TAME Club Leader about the date or other plans for your competition, please talk to them to make sure they are planning for your Club to attend. If you are a TAME Club Leader and have not heard from the State Office regarding this year’s Regional Competition, email programs@tame.org to confirm your TAME Club’s eligibility and intent to participate.
*Eligible TAME Clubs have met all the requirements, including having an adult leader, at least 6 registered students in grades 6-12, with 60% of student members from groups that are underrepresented in engineering, including Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Indigenous/Native American, or girls — or the TAME Club is at a Title I school.
What happens at the TAME Regional Competitions?
Students from TAME Clubs throughout the Region meet to solve problems, connect with one another, and explore engineering through real-world engineering design challenges, developed by the TAME State Office and local Regional Leaders.
Teams of students will collaborate to design and build their solution to a real-world engineering problem.
How can I prepare my Club for the TAME Regional Competition?
In 2024, the TAME Competitions will focus on Lesson 7 from this year’s curriculum – affordable and clean energy. We encourage Club Leaders to cover this material by mid-January 2024.
To help our students better prepare for our Competitions, TAME also provides past Engineering Design Challenges, Engineering Adventure activities, and advice on competing like a scientist.
You do not need to prepare beforehand: The Engineering Design Challenge requirements and all materials will be provided at the TAME Regional Competition.
TAME’s Blog features Engineering Adventures, and you can visit TAME’s Engineering Activity board on Pinterest for design challenge ideas that you can practice with friends in the classroom or try with your family.
Do you allow academic accommodations at the TAME Regional Competitions?
TAME is committed to providing accessible activities and events. We know that to do so, we may need to make reasonable and necessary accommodations to our Regional Competition structure. We have a policy regarding academic accommodation requests to ensure they are handled consistently.
Accommodation requests must be submitted to the TAME State Office by a Club Leader no later than thirty days before the event. Please read the full policy here before submitting a request.
When and where will results be posted?
Results will be posted to the TAME website as soon as possible after each event. Please see our Competition Schedules & Results page for updates.
How much does it cost to participate in the TAME Regional Competitions?
TAME activities are free to students. There is no fee to register or compete in Regional Competitions. All Regional Competition materials will be provided at the events. Lunch will also be provided.
I have other plans the day of the event. Can I attend part of the TAME Regional Competition?
In fairness to all students, it is TAME policy that all participants must take part in all the scheduled events of the Regional Competition.
We understand there may be schedule conflicts and ask that students make a choice between other plans and the Regional Competition rather than trying to do both. This ensures a level playing field and consistent experience for all our students.
Can parents or other family members attend the TAME Regional Competitions?
Some Regional Competitions have enough room for parents or other family members to attend the awards ceremony at the end of the day and celebrate their students. But not all Competitions have sufficient seating or facilities.
Check with your TAME Club Leader and the Competition Coordinator before planning to attend a Regional Engineering Competition. Family members are not allowed to observe the Engineering Design Challenge to avoid distracting the students.
Food and supplies will only be provided for students, club leaders, and registered volunteers.
What if I have more questions that aren't on this list?
Ask your Club Leader or your Region Leader if you have questions. You can also email programs@tame.org for more information.
