As National Volunteer Week 2024 comes to a close, TAME is recognizing some of the incredible volunteers who selflessly donate their time, passion and talents to lead TAME Clubs and support and inspire the next generation of diverse Texas engineers.
One of TAME’s super volunteers is Carolyn Garza, educator and TAME Club Leader in the San Antonio Region. Below is an eloquent and moving reflection from Mrs. Garza that considers her volunteer work with TAME and the impact that the program has had on her students.
For the past seven years, my husband and I have been volunteering with our TAME group, Growing with STEMs. Every moment spent with this organization and our kids has been incredibly fulfilling. TAME offers a unique platform to expose kids to professions they may not have otherwise considered or felt intimidated by. Through hands-on experiences, TAME has cultivated a love for Math and Science, showcasing their relevance in the real world rather than simply lecturing or reading from a textbook. Our kids are able to engage in conversations about various STEM topics with ease, thanks to the exposure provided by TAME. As Club Leaders, TAME has equipped us with resources for our lessons, making the journey with our students an exciting and rewarding one.
As our students are now starting to graduate and move on to college, it brings us so much joy to hear how TAME has impacted their lives. Beyond just science, the lessons learned in the scientific and engineering process have taught them to ask questions, listen to everyone’s ideas and most importantly to not be afraid to fail because there is so much to be learned from failure. These are invaluable life skills that have shaped them into resilient adults, and we are proud to have been a part of their journey.
Volunteering with TAME has allowed us to create a special bond with each student. We always remind them that no matter where life takes them they will forever have a place with us. It’s a privilege to know that we’ve played a role in shaping not only their futures, but also their character. Thank you, TAME, for the rewarding opportunity to make a difference.
