(San Angelo, TX) – The 2017 TAME San Angelo STEM Competition was hosted at the Recreation Facility of Plaza Verde Residence Hall at Angelo State University on Saturday February 4, 2017. The event, held free of cost to participants, brought together student competitors (grades 6-12) from across the region.
Students competed in individual math and science tests and were grouped into teams to participate in an Engineering Design Challenge. This year’s challenge was developed by engineers from Boeing. The top six students from each test and the top three teams from the Engineering Design Challenge were recognized. One team also received a special Judges’ Choice Award for creative problem solving.
“The students enjoyed the design challenge very much,” said Competition Coordinator and Chapter Chair Janice Trees. “As usual it was the highlight of the day.”
Faculty from TAME’s higher education partner Angelo State University joined in the events of the day with demonstrations and lectures. “Dr. Daniel Castaneda did a demonstration on forces which the kids enjoyed because they watched him break things like metal and concrete,” said Trees. “Dr. William Kitch, head of the CE department, volunteered as one of our Engineering Judges. He enjoyed the Engineering Design Challenge so much that during the snack break he downloaded some photos and gave a short lecture on [the subject of the top secret Engineering Design Challenge]. He also took questions from the kids about careers in engineering and science, and he gave them some tips about college prep and AP classes.”
The Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) is a statewide 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1976 that enables Texas students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). In addition to testing student knowledge of math and science concepts, the competition promotes teamwork, leadership, and academic achievement.
