"We need all the engineers we can get." Gregg Rice, 3M

Workforce diversity is a worthwhile investment. According to recent research, mixed gender teams achieve 40% more patents than all-male teams, while gender diversity at the management level results in a $42 million increase in the value of S&P 500 firms. And that’s just gender! How do we connect our many bright students to opportunities in STEM industries? It turns out that a sleeping bag – and other measures to include students from diverse backgrounds – is part of the answer.

When TAME students collaborate on an engineering design challenge, they’re not thinking about gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic differences. They’re thinking about how to wrap a fuselage, how to maximize wing span, or whether a spitball can qualify as an air-powered vehicle. They’re thinking like engineers.

Our mission is to keep Texas students focused on the big picture. Every year, the State STEM Competition brings students from across Texas together to celebrate academic achievement. The Engineering Design Challenges and math and science tests build confidence, teach teamwork, and connect students to a supportive peer group.

TAME Ambassador Taylor Johnson joined a TAME club in 7th grade. She’s now majoring in biomedical engineering. We’re proud of her – and we’re happy to see that even a hi-tech arm can use a little blue tape.

When TAME students like Taylor collaborate on an engineering design challenge, they’re not thinking about gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic differences. They’re thinking about how to make a robotic hand, how to maximize wing span, or whether a spitball can qualify as an air-powered vehicle. They’re thinking like engineers.

When TAME students collaborate on an engineering design challenge, they’re not thinking about gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic differences. They’re thinking about how to make a better wind turbine, how to maximize wing span, or whether a spitball can qualify as an air-powered vehicle. They’re thinking like engineers.
