Students at Fort Stockton Middle School are preparing for a day of exciting visits to their 8th Grade STEM Day. Congressman William Hurd (R-TX23) will attend the event on Friday, December 4th, held in recognition of The Boeing Company’s contribution to STEM education in Texas. Students will also be welcomed aboard the TAME Trailblazer, a unique traveling science museum-on-wheels.
Congressman Hurd, whose district includes many of Texas’ strongest oil and gas production areas, is a strong proponent of STEM education, and his participation in this event highlights the boom of STEM industries in Texas. The event also celebrates Boeing’s generous support of STEM programs, including a partnership with The Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) to provide Family STEM Night events centered on the TAME Trailblazer.
An integral part of TAME’s mission of encouraging female and underrepresented minority students to pursue careers in STEM, the Trailblazer travels to schools and communities across Texas to engage students in 3rd-8th grade with hands-on exhibits exploring concepts in energy, space, weather, biotechnology, and aerodynamics. Boeing funding will also support development of toolkits and training for TAME Clubs, which provide a supportive place to build STEM and problem-solving skills and to connect to a network of peers, mentors, and future employers. The Fort Stockton Middle School TAME Club, led by teacher Dawn Ramirez, currently has 28 students participating.
Congressman Hurd will speak to students at 2 pm on Friday and then will tour the Trailblazer exhibits. Friday’s event will encourage some 185 8th grade students from all classes, including art, physical education and English, to explore ways in which science, technology, engineering, and mathematics relate to other areas of study and can lead to interesting careers in STEM.
