State STEM Update: Ziplines, Event Conflict, & 11/7 Deadline

Ready, set – register your TAME Club!

The 34th annual State STEM Competition, presented by ConocoPhillips, is scheduled for April 27th, 2019 in the greater Houston area.

To participate, please register your TAME Club (tame.org/club2018) and students (tame.org/student2018) by 11:59 pm on November 7th. Clubs and students must register every year to participate in the Divisional & State STEM Competitions.

Fourteen Divisional STEM Competitions will be held around the state in January and February of 2019, and high-achieving participants from each of these qualifying events will be invited to attend the State Competition in April 2019.

Welcome to TAME Engineering Adventures!  Our goal is to help you challenge your students with hands-on learning. 

Wind it up! This Engineering Adventure is to design and build the rotor for a wind turbine. We're offering a classroom adaptation of the Engineering Design Challenge from the 32nd Annual TAME State STEM Competition sponsored by Boeing and hosted by CPS Energy at La Villita Assembly Building in downtown San Antonio, Texas on April 8th, 2017.

It's a great way to get your TAME Club members to start thinking like engineers in preparation for our STEM Competitions.

TAME Ambassador Taylor Johnson spent her summer doing research in the ReNeu Robotics Lab at The University of Texas at Austin! She's pictured here running tests on the Harmony Exoskeleton which helps stroke patients with rehabilitation.

Taylor first got involved with TAME in the 7th grade, and is now majoring in Biomedical Engineering. (Want to get involved, too? TAME Club registration is free and open now at tame.org/club2018 -- students have until 11:59pm on November 7th to register for our STEM Competitions.)

The TAME meeting filled the entire lecture hall with students. The guest speaker, an entrepreneur, brought in a device that connected the optic nerves of the student who wore it, allowing researchers to test how well these nerves functioned for the student.

Guest speakers from professional industries are one of the many opportunities offered to TAME club members. The mission of the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering is to increase the number of underrepresented groups in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

Shell Fuels STEM Education with $90K Grant

The Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) is pleased to announce that longtime partner Shell Oil Company has generously awarded $90,000 to empower Texas students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Since its first gift to TAME in 1978, Shell has helped to build a STEM workforce that looks like Texas.

The funding will support all aspects of the TAME Trailblazer Program, bringing an innovative, mobile STEM engagement experience to students. The grant also funded the Outstanding Senior Award at the 2018 State STEM Competition, presented to Brisa Diaz, a high school senior from Everman Joe C. Bean High School in TAME’s Dallas Chapter. Brisa plans to attend The University of Texas at Arlington and pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering this fall.

Texas Students Show Laser Focus at 2018 State STEM Competition

(Anna, TX) – What could you do with a bakery box, a laser beam, six lenses and an hour? Students from across Texas were presented with this challenge on Saturday, April 28th, as part of the 33rd annual TAME State STEM Competition, sponsored by Raytheon, hosted at YMCA Collin County Adventure Camp in Anna, Texas. Students used the supplies to focus and diffuse a laser beam during the Engineering Design Challenge segment of the competition.

Winners Announced for 2018 T-Shirt Design Contest


(Austin, TX) The Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering is pleased to announce the winners of the 14th annual T-Shirt Design Contest for the 2018 TAME State STEM Competition, presented by Raytheon on April 28th in the DFW area. TAME students across Texas submitted a record number of entries for the theme "Ideas in Orbit," impressing judges with artistic creativity and design.

Congratulations to Ivye Blythe Arioja Dolino of Presidio High School and the Presidio Rocketry and Robotics TAME Club for becoming the first student from TAME's West Texas Chapter to win first place in this contest! The top scoring student receives a special invitation to the State STEM Competition. At State Ms. Dolino will awarded a $100 prize onstage. Her design will be unveiled on the day of the event, where it will be featured on the t-shirts, event programs and other materials that will be distributed to hundreds of participants.

Students competed in individual math and science tests and as part of a team to solve an Engineering Design Challenge. This year's challenge was developed by engineers from Raytheon. The top six finishers in each test and the top three teams from the Engineering Design Challenge were recognized. Three teams also received a special Judges' Choice Award for creative problem solving. One student from each grade level was recognized as the Ace Award Winner for the highest combined math and science score.
