Program Title: TAME Gerald Carrington Scholarship
The TAME Gerald Carrington Scholarship honors long-time volunteer Gerald Carrington, who passed away in March 2009. Gerald was a dedicated TAME supporter, contributing his time and talents for 19 years, as a BCAME Chair, Board Member, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. The scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to a student pursuing higher education in a science, technology, engineering, or math-related field of study.
Program Objectives
One of the barriers preventing students, particularly under-represented
minorities, from pursuing higher education is financial. While there are
other factors that prevent students from attending college, our
objective would be to provide financial assistance through scholarship
awards of $1,000 to up to four deserving TAME students to help cover tuition,
room, board, books and/or fees for the student’s freshman year of college.
Program Activities
Each of our certified TAME Chapters will be invited to select two students to apply for the
TAME Gerald Carrington Scholarship program. The students must meet the
requirements listed on the Scholarship Guidelines.
Each recipient of a TAME Gerald Carrington Scholarship
will be required to report back at the end of their first semester.
This not only allows TAME the chance to learn about the
student’s freshman experience, but encourages a dialogue for support for
the student from the TAME office. Staying in touch with TAME will
provide scholarship recipients with information about summer internships
or other important opportunities allowing further career exploration and
advancement.
Program Description
Applications for awards will be made available on
the TAME website in March. Students must submit their applications to their Chapter Chair (or designated representative) by April
16, 2010. Chapters will be required to
submit their top two applications to the TAME State Office by April 30, 2010. Awards
will be announced by June of 2010. Awards are for the academic year 2010-2011. Funds will be forwarded to the appropriate college/university between
June and August, 2010 once students have submitted required acceptance documentation to the
TAME State Office.
Program Participation
The program provides up to four (4) students with $1,000
scholarships. We expect a minimum of six (6) entries, but may have as
many as 20 (if all 10 active chapters participate). Although only four students will be awarded a scholarship,
the program serves to encourage all students who participate to further
their education by providing them with the experience of applying for
financial assistance. The essay requirement serves as a self-evaluation
tool and asks the applicant to review and articulate his/her reasons for
pursuing a degree in science, technology, math or engineering.
Program Evaluation
In an effort to track their educational progress,
students are required to sign an authorization to release grades prior
to receiving their award funds. Each college or university will provide
the office with the grade report for that academic period.
Success/Educational Progress
Role models often develop from previous scholarship
recipients. TAME intends to track the progress of scholarship
recipients so that successful graduates and those who enter a STEM
career can be contacted to act as speakers for current TAME students in
the areas within which they reside. This allows the individual
recipient the chance to share their story with and inspire the next
generation.
