Thanks to a generous grant from Halliburton, we are thrilled to
provide all of our active TAME alliances the opportunity to help up to five
students secure $1,500 in financial assistance for their freshmen year
in college through this new scholarship program! Alliance
officers: please review the program guidelines and encourage applicants from
your alliance membership to complete and submit their application to
you. ONLY
SELECTED APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED BY THE ALLIANCE CHAIR WILL BE
CONSIDERED. If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact the
TAME central office. The
five $1,500 scholarship award recipients will be determined by a TAME
committee and announced in late May/early June, for use during their 2008-2009 freshman
school year. Good luck to all of our applicants!
Program Title: HALLIBURTON SCHOLARSHIP
Program Objectives
One of the barriers preventing students, particularly under-represented
minorities, from pursuing higher education is financial. While there are
other factors that prevent students from attending college, our
objective would be to provide financial assistance through scholarship
awards of $1,500 to up to five deserving TAME students to help cover tuition,
room, board, books and/or fees for the student’s freshman year of college.
Program Activities
Each of our certified TAME Alliances (currently 10 in total)
will be invited to select two students to apply for the
Halliburton Scholarship program. The students must meet the
requirements listed on the Scholarship Guidelines.
Each recipient of a TAME/Halliburton scholarship
will be required to report back at the end of their first semester.
This not only allows TAME and Halliburton the chance to learn about the
student’s freshmen experience, but encourages a dialogue for support for
the student from the TAME office. Staying in touch with TAME will
provide scholarship recipients with information about summer internships
or other important opportunities allowing further career exploration and
advancement.
Program Description
Applications for awards will be made available on
the TAME website in January. Alliances will be required to
submit the two student applications by May 7, 2008 and awards
will be announced by June of 2008. Awards are for the academic year 2008-2009. Funds will be forwarded to the appropriate college/university between
June-August, 2008 once students have submitted required acceptance documentation to the
TAME State Office.
Program Participation
The program provides up to five (5) students with $1,500
scholarships. We expect a minimum of six (6) entries, but may have as
many as 20 (if all 10 active alliances participate). Although only five students will be awarded a scholarship,
the program serves to encourage all students who participate to further
their education by providing them with the experience of applying for
financial assistance. The essay requirement serves as a self-evaluation
tool and asks the applicant to review and articulate his/her reasons for
pursuing a degree in science, math or engineering.
Program Evaluation
The selection
committee and Executive Director will review the program in the summer and
provide an overall assessment. Suggestions for improvements will be
discussed and necessary adjustments will be determined.
In an effort to track their educational progress,
students are required to sign an authorization to release grades prior
to receiving their award funds. Each college or university will provide
the office with the grade report for that academic period.
Success/Educational Progress
Role models often develop from previous scholarship
recipients. TAME intends to track the progress of scholarship
recipients so that successful graduates and those who enter a STEM
career can be contacted to act as speakers for current TAME students in
the areas within which they reside. This allows the individual
recipient the chance to share their story with and inspire the next
generation.
